What is PTM?

PTM (Porsche Traction Management) is Porsche's electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. An electrohydraulically operated multi-plate clutch splits drive torque continuously between front and rear axle. In normal running most of the power goes to the rear axle, so the rear-biased character of a 911 is preserved. When needed, up to 100 % is sent forward within milliseconds.

PTM on the circuit

On a dry circuit PTM helps when accelerating out of tight corners: slip at the rear axle is offset immediately by extra drive at the front. The result is better traction, less intervention from PSM and higher corner exit speed. In the wet or on a slippery surface the advantage is bigger still and can be worth seconds a lap.

PTM versus pure rear-wheel drive

A classic rear-wheel-drive 911 asks for more sensitivity with the throttle and reacts more sharply to lift-off load changes. PTM models such as the Carrera 4, Turbo or Targa 4 are more forgiving at the limit – in exchange for a little more weight and a touch less agility. Which version suits you better depends on driver, circuit and conditions.
