What is the Typklasse?

The Typklasse, or insurance type class, is a German rating that scores every car model according to its statistical claims risk. It is calculated each year by the GDV, the German Insurance Association, using claims data from recent years. Sports cars such as the Porsche GT3 sit in high type classes: they are driven harder and they are expensive to repair. For own-damage cover on circuit, the type class is a significant cost factor.

Type classes for Porsche models

Porsche models generally sit in high type classes. A 911 Carrera is already rated above average, and the GT3 and GT3 RS are at the top end of the scale. That means high premiums in everyday use and on specialist track day policies. The combination of vehicle value, power and sporting use makes GT cars high-risk vehicles in an insurer's eyes.

Type class and trackday insurance

Type classes feed into the premium calculation for trackday cover too. A Porsche Boxster is cheaper to insure than a GT3 RS, even though both are lapping the same circuit. Some providers will not write certain high-risk models at all, or only with an extreme excess. The Nordschleife combined with a GT3 RS is the highest-premium scenario there is.
