Porsche 992 Generation

Author

What is the 992 generation?

The 992 generation is the eighth incarnation of the Porsche 911, introduced in 2018. Compared with the preceding 991, the front track and body width were increased, the interior was completely redesigned around a large touchscreen, and new driver aids such as Wet Mode were added.

Model variants

The 992 range covers Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4S, Targa 4, Targa 4S, Turbo, Turbo S, GT3, GT3 RS, S/T, Dakar and several special editions. All coupé models use a 3.0 or 3.8 litre twin-turbo flat six, while the GT models run the 4.0 litre naturally aspirated engine that revs to 9,000 rpm. PDK is standard; a manual gearbox is available only on the GT3 and S/T.

992 versus its predecessor

The 992 has grown, both in dimensions and in complexity. More comfort, more technology, more assistance, but also more weight. Purists miss the more direct mechanics of the 991. Track day drivers appreciate the better chassis, the faster shifts and the sharper GT versions. Which generation is better comes down to taste.
