What is VarioCam Plus?

VarioCam Plus is Porsche's variable valve system – it adapts valve timing and valve lift to engine speed and load. At low revs, small cam lobes with short lift give clean combustion and low consumption. At higher revs and load the system switches to larger lobes with longer lift: more torque, more power, more sound.

The advantage in engine design

Conventional engines have to compromise between torque and peak power. VarioCam Plus resolves that dilemma: a broad torque curve low down, free-revving power up top. On the Nordschleife that means torque out of the tight corners and power through the high-speed sections – both from a single engine.

VarioCam and modern turbo engines

On the 992 Turbo and Turbo S, Porsche combines VarioCam with twin turbocharging. The result: no turbo lag, immediate response, brutal performance. In the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine of the GT3 RS the system delivers a breathtaking power curve all the way to 9,000 rpm.
