What is a racing licence?

A racing licence is the official permit issued by a national motorsport authority - in Germany the DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund) - that entitles you to enter competitive events. It certifies that you have completed the required training, passed a medical examination and understood the rules of motorsport. For pure trackdays and driver training days no racing licence is required.

Types of racing licence

The DMSB issues several licence grades. The national A licence allows you to enter German championships and endurance races. The international licence (C, B or A) allows starts at FIA events worldwide. To get started, a national permit licence or a club sport licence is often enough and involves far less effort. The Porsche Cup, for example, requires an international C licence.

How to get a racing licence

The classic route is a DMSB-approved course: theory on regulations and flag signals, practical driving exercises and a medical examination. Depending on the grade, costs run from around 200 to 1,000 euros, plus an annual renewal fee. For the lower grades the DMSB also accepts proof of sufficient trackday experience.

You do not need a licence to drive with ESC - but our trackdays are ideal preparation if you want to move into racing later. At ESC events you build circuit experience, learn from former factory drivers and develop exactly the skills a licence course asks for. Start without a licence, dream of the podium.
