What is the 991 generation?

The 991 generation of the Porsche 911 was produced from 2011 to 2019 and is regarded by many enthusiasts as the last classic 911 range. The key milestone: the 991.1 still offered naturally aspirated engines in the Carrera models, while the 991.2 moved to twin-turbo charging – a decision that is still debated today.

991.1 versus 991.2

The 991.1 (2011–2015) used 3.4 and 3.8 litre naturally aspirated engines: emotional and free-revving, but with less torque. The 991.2 (facelift, 2015–2019) received a 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat six with more torque and less appetite for revs. Both versions have their followers. The 991.2 GT models such as the GT3 and GT3 RS stayed naturally aspirated, much to the delight of collectors.

991 highlights

The 991 range produced some of the most wanted 911s of all: the 911 R as the purist collector's dream, the GT3 RS with its 500 hp naturally aspirated engine, and the S/T as a final tribute. It also brought the first modern Turbo S, which broke the 200 mph barrier with ease. The 991 combines classic 911 dynamics with modern engineering, and many consider it the perfect 911.
