What is the Porsche 911 R?

The Porsche 911 R is a 991-generation special edition from 2016, built in just 991 units – the purist variant with a naturally aspirated GT3 engine (500 hp), a six-speed manual gearbox and no fixed rear wing. Visually an elegant 911 without aggressive aerodynamics, technically a full GT sports car – the best of both worlds.

Concept and audience

The 911 R was aimed at purists who wanted GT3 performance with a manual gearbox and understated looks. The rear spoiler only deploys electrically at higher speeds. Kerb weight is around 1,370 kg, lighter than the GT3 of the day. The result is an uncompromising sports car that still works on the road.

Collector value and myth

The 911 R became a sensation: heavily oversubscribed, with market prices in six figures. It remains one of the most sought-after 911s ever built. Its success led directly to the later 991.2 GT3 with a manual option – Porsche listened to the message from the market.
