What is free driving?

Free driving is a trackday format for drivers with circuit experience who want to lap independently, without an instructor ahead of them. You set your own pace, your own lines and your own learning goals. Unlike Touristenfahrten, the public sessions at the Nürburgring, free driving takes place on an exclusively hired circuit – with no oncoming traffic and with professional marshalling.

How it differs from other formats

In free driving there is no convoy behind a lead car as there is in guided driving. You share the circuit with other participants of varying experience. Clear overtaking rules – usually only in designated zones or after a hand signal – keep it safe. The format demands good situational awareness: you have to read other drivers, keep an eye on your mirrors and know your own limit.

What you need to take part

Although no racing licence is required, reputable organisers expect previous experience. As a rule you should have completed at least two or three trackdays before moving into free driving. Knowing your car – how it reacts to load transfer, where the limits of grip are – is essential for your safety and for everyone else on track.

Free driving at ESC

At ESC trackdays you can choose between guided sessions and free driving, often combined within a single day. Even without a lead car, ESC instructors are available for feedback and onboard analysis. In your own sports car or in the CarForGo fleet – find available dates.
