Porsche Cayman GT4
What is the Porsche Cayman GT4?
The 718 Cayman GT4 is the pure mid-engine sports car in Porsche's GT programme. Its 4.0 litre naturally aspirated flat six produces 420 hp and revs to 8,000 rpm. Unlike the even sharper GT4 RS it stays a little more usable on the road, without the induction sound intakes behind the side windows and with more restrained aerodynamics.
The mid-engine advantage
The mid-engine layout delivers an almost ideal weight distribution of around 50:50. The result is exceptionally balanced handling: the GT4 responds precisely to steering inputs, forgives more at the limit than a 911 and is the friendlier car for anyone entering the GT world. It is no toy, though – with a proper setup it is genuinely quick on circuit.
GT4 versus GT3 versus GT4 RS
The GT4 is the gateway into the GT range: cheaper than a GT3 and less demanding thanks to the mid-engine layout. The GT3 is sharper, more powerful and carries rear-engine DNA. The GT4 RS combines both, putting the GT3 engine into the Cayman chassis. Which one is better depends entirely on your driving style.
