What is an FIA bucket seat?

An FIA bucket seat is a competition seat with FIA homologation (8855-1999 or 8862-2009). Built from carbon fibre, Kevlar or steel, it has pronounced side bolsters and fixed belt openings. Unlike a road seat, a bucket seat neither adjusts nor folds – it either fits you or it does not.

FIA standards

FIA 8855-1999: glass fibre and Kevlar seats, valid for around seven years. FIA 8862-2009: the highest protection level, mainly carbon seats, with no expiry date. Top-level 8862 seats come from brands such as Sparco, OMP and Recaro. For track days with a licence requirement an 8855 seat is normally sufficient.
