6-Point Harness

What is a 6-point harness?

A 6-point harness is a race belt with six mounting points: two shoulder straps, two lap straps and two anti-submarining straps between the legs. The driver is held completely in the seat – essential under high cornering loads, hard braking and in a crash.

Why six points?

A standard three-point belt lets you slide in the seat, which becomes a problem at 1.5 g of lateral acceleration. You lose body control and can no longer steer precisely. A 6-point harness locks the body in place, so you concentrate on the car instead of on holding yourself up. The anti-submarining straps between the legs stop you sliding underneath the lap belt in an impact.

FIA homologation

For competition use, harnesses need FIA homologation (FIA 8853-2016 or 8854-98). They carry a defined expiry date, typically five years. Important: always run a 6-point harness with an FIA bucket seat – the mounting points are matched to that seat. Never fit a 6-point harness to a standard road seat.
