What is a limited-slip differential?

A limited-slip differential couples the two driven wheels of an axle mechanically or electronically. Without one, an open differential lets the inside wheel spin faster through a corner. That is comfortable, but with serious power it costs traction. A locking diff distributes torque intelligently across both wheels.

How locking differentials work

Mechanical units, such as Salisbury-type or clutch-pack designs, resist differential movement above a given speed difference. Electronic systems such as Porsche PTV+ (Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus) use the brakes instead: braking the inside wheel shifts torque outwards and helps the car rotate. Current 911 Turbo S and GT3 models use high-quality diffs with programmable characteristics.

Advantages on track

With a locking diff you lose far less traction on corner exit. Instead of one spinning inside wheel, both wheels put power down. The result is stronger acceleration out of the corner and less power-on oversteer. On a rear-drive car such as the 911, it is essential for serious circuit use.
