Trackday Insurance — Is Your Car Really Protected on the Racetrack?

You've booked your first trackday, the GT3 is ready to go — and then the sobering realization: Your normal car insurance won't pay a cent on the racetrack.

This is not an isolated case. In fact, virtually all standard comprehensive insurance policies explicitly exclude racetrack use. Even more critical: Since January 2025, the rules of the game have fundamentally changed. What you need to know about trackday insurance now — and how you can drive carefree at ESC Trackdays .

What is Trackday Insurance?

Trackday insurance is a special car insurance that covers damage to your vehicle while being used on a racetrack. It steps in where your normal car insurance does not cover.

The difference from your everyday insurance: While standard comprehensive insurance covers damage during "normal" use in road traffic, trackday insurance specifically covers the increased risk on the racetrack — from the Nordschleife via Hockenheim to Spa-Francorchamps.

Car insurance contract and general terms — trackday insurance requires separate policy
Most car insurance policies explicitly exclude racetrack use in their general terms and conditions.
Important: Trackday insurance is not race insurance. It applies to free driving and supervised trackdays, not to official competitions with timing or officially approved races.

New 2025: What Has Changed with Insurance

This is where it gets exciting — and very few trackday drivers know this.

At the end of 2024, almost all German insurers fundamentally revised their general terms and conditions for motor vehicle insurance. The reason: An EU directive and amendments to the Compulsory Insurance Act that came into force on January 1, 2025.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

The new conditions now explicitly exclude all motorsport events — and are worded much more strictly than before. Previously, the vague phrase "races and race-like events" often applied. The new general terms speak of "Events where it is important to achieve maximum speed".

This concerns:

  • Classic trackdays on racetracks
  • Clubsport events
  • Tourist drives (with restrictions)
  • Driving safety training on closed circuits (partially)

The good news: DVR-certified driving safety training is usually still covered by your normal insurance. More on this later.

What Does Trackday Insurance Cover?

Before you take out a policy, you need to understand the difference between the types of insurance. This is crucial.

Liability vs. Comprehensive Insurance — The Important Difference

Insurance TypeWhat's Covered? When Do You Need It?
Motorsport Liability              Damage you cause to others (people, other vehicles, track boundaries)      Mandatory on some tracks, e.g. for tourist drives
Comprehensive Coverage              Damage to your own vehicle      If you want to protect your own car
Participant Liability              Combination: Damage to you and others      Most common trackday solution
Accident Insurance              Personal injury to you as driver      Additional protection recommended
Attention: Most cheap trackday offers are pure liability policies. They only pay if you damage someone else — not if you hit the guardrail yourself.

What is Typically NOT Covered?

  • Damage due to engine failure or technical defect
  • Wear and tear (brakes, tires)
  • Damage during official timed races
  • Intentionally caused damage
  • Damage if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs

How Much Does Trackday Insurance Cost?

The honest answer: It depends. The price range is enormous — from under €100 to well over €1,000 per day.

Without trackday insurance, you bear the repair costs entirely yourself.

Trackday Insurance 2025 Price Overview

Insurance TypePrice Per DayPrice Per YearDeductible
       Daily Liability      120–180 €usually none
Daily Comprehensive (Standard)      250–500 €10–15% of damage
Daily Comprehensive (Premium)      800–1.200 €€3,000–5,000 fixed
       Annual Liability      600–900 €usually none
       Annual Comprehensive      ab 2.500 €variable
As of: December 2025. Prices vary depending on vehicle value, track, and provider.

Factors That Influence the Price

Vehicle value: A GT3 RS with a replacement value of €250,000 costs significantly more to insure than a Cayman for €60,000.

Insurance amount: The higher the maximum payout, the higher the premium. Common are €50,000 to €500,000.

Deductible: The most important adjustment lever. A higher deductible significantly lowers the premium. Common are:

  • Percentage: 10–15% of damage (so-called integral deductible)
  • Fixed: €3,000–10,000 per claim

Track: Some insurers exclude certain tracks or charge surcharges — especially for the Nordschleife.

Tuning status: Vehicles with significant performance modifications are often harder or more expensive to insure.

Nordschleife, Nürburgring & Co. — Special Features

Nordschleife tourist drives — special insurance rules at the Nürburgring
The Nordschleife is a private toll road — with special insurance rules.

The Nordschleife is a special case. And for good reason.

Tourist Drives: A Legal Gray Area

Tourist drives on the Nordschleife are officially a "private toll road". This means: The Compulsory Insurance Act applies here to a limited extent. Your normal car liability insurance is basically valid — but whether your comprehensive coverage pays is another matter.

Practical Tip: Check the current general terms of your insurance before every tourist drive. Most have also tightened up here since 2025.

Exclusive Trackdays vs. Tourist Drives

For organized trackdays on the Nordschleife or the GP circuit, different rules apply than for tourist drives:

  • The track is exclusively rented
  • The organizer's conditions apply
  • Trackday insurance is mandatory (or use the organizer's vehicle)

At ESC, we regularly offer trackdays at the Nürburgring and on the Nordschleife — with comprehensively insured vehicles from our fleet.

Tracks with Special Requirements

Some trackday insurers exclude certain tracks or charge surcharges:

  • Nordschleife: Often excluded or with 25–50% surcharge
  • Spa-Francorchamps: Eau Rouge/Raidillon as high-risk zone
  • Mugello: Not included in some policies

At ESC trackdays, you drive with our comprehensively insured fleet. This means: You don't have to worry about a separate insurance.

Driving Safety Training — A Special Case

Good news for anyone who wants to start carefully: DVR-certified driving safety training (German Road Safety Council) are usually covered by your normal car insurance.

Why the Difference?

The legislator and insurers differentiate between:

  1. Driving safety training: The goal is to improve driving skills, not to reach top speeds. These are considered "normal" driving operation.
  2. Trackdays: The goal is to drive the vehicle under racing conditions. These fall under the motorsport exclusion.
Tip: When booking driving safety training, pay attention to DVR certification. It is your insurance coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trackday Insurance (FAQ)

Do I need trackday insurance if I drive a rental vehicle?

That depends on the provider. With ESC, comprehensive hull coverage is already included in the price – you only pay the transparent deductible in the event of a claim. The participant liability insurance required since 2025 is also included with ESC vehicles.

What does the deductible mean in trackday insurance?

The deductible is the amount you pay yourself in the event of a claim. At ESC it is set by default at €15,000 and can optionally be reduced to €3,000.

Does my regular insurance cover driver safety training?

Generally yes – if it is a DVR-certified training program. These do not count as motorsport events and are therefore usually covered by your standard hull policy.

What changed in 2025 for trackday insurance?

Most insurers tightened their general terms (AKB) at the end of 2024. Under §5d of the German Compulsory Insurance Act (PflVG), participant liability insurance has been mandatory on racetracks since 2025. It can be taken out by the keeper, owner, driver, or event organizer.

Which insurance do you need for the Nordschleife?

Even for Touristenfahrten on the Nordschleife, you have been required to carry participant liability insurance under §5d PflVG since 2025. Your regular hull policy generally does not pay out there. For organized Trackdays, participant liability insurance is mandatory.

When does hull insurance not pay out?

For engine damage, technical failure, wear, official races with timed competition, willful intent, or driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

Who pays in the event of an accident on the racetrack?

Damage to third parties (other participants, track owners) is covered by participant liability insurance. Damage to your own vehicle is only covered if you have taken out separate trackday hull insurance, or if you are using a hull-insured vehicle from the event organizer.

Are you insured at the Nürburgring?

For Touristenfahrten, your regular liability coverage applies in a limited way, but your hull policy generally does not pay out. For exclusive Trackdays, you absolutely need separate participant liability insurance under §5d PflVG.

How much does trackday insurance cost?

Participant liability insurance (mandatory!) costs approximately €600 + insurance tax per year. A daily hull policy for a Porsche GT3 RS realistically runs about €1,500 per day (with a maximum payout of €120,000). Race vehicles such as a GT4 Clubsport cost approximately €2,500 per day.

What is trackday insurance?

Trackday insurance is a special motor insurance policy for use on racetracks. It typically includes the participant liability insurance required since 2025 (for damage to third parties) and optionally a hull component (for damage to your own vehicle).
