What is the WEC?

The WEC (FIA World Endurance Championship) is the official world championship for endurance racing, run by the FIA since 2012. Its highlight is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Other rounds include the 6 Hours of Spa, the 6 Hours of Fuji and the 8 Hours of Bahrain. The field is made up of Hypercars as the top class, LMP2 prototypes and LMGT3 cars.

The classes

Hypercar: the top class with around 700 bhp and hybrid drive, contested by factory teams such as Toyota, Ferrari, Porsche, Cadillac and BMW. LMP2: the customer prototype class with an Oreca chassis and a control engine of roughly 600 bhp. LMGT3: the GT class since 2024, replacing LMGTE, with factory and customer cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren and others.

Why the WEC is worth watching

The WEC combines high-speed circuits, long race distances, complex setup work and serious manufacturer competition. Le Mans is the most famous motor race in the world, and for sports car enthusiasts the championship is essential viewing. Live it is something else entirely: 24 hours of atmosphere, speed and drama.
