What are UHP tyres?

UHP tyres (ultra high performance) are road-going sports tyres built for high speeds and high cornering loads. They carry speed ratings from W (270 km/h) or Y (300 km/h) upwards, an asymmetric tread pattern, a soft compound and reinforced construction. Examples include the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, Continental SportContact 7 and Pirelli P Zero.

UHP versus cup tyres

UHP tyres are genuine everyday tyres: strong performance, sound wet behaviour and a sensible compromise on wear. Cup tyres are semi-slicks with far more dry grip, weaker wet performance and much faster wear. UHP is the right class for the vast majority of sports car drivers who use their car regularly.

UHP on a track day

A UHP tyre is better than a standard road tyre and clearly behind a cup tyre or a slick. For occasional track days that is entirely enough. You will not set records, but you drive safely and with good performance, and you can head home afterwards without changing wheels. For most track day amateurs that is the ideal compromise.
