Track Flags

What are track flags?

Track flags are the language of the marshals on a circuit – coloured signal flags that tell drivers what is happening on track. Every colour has a clear meaning. If you do not know the flags, you should not be on a circuit: this is the most important safety language in motorsport.

The key flags

Green: track clear, racing continues. Yellow: danger ahead, no overtaking. Double yellow: greater danger, slow down significantly. White: a slow vehicle on track (ambulance, recovery truck). Blue: a faster car behind, let it past. Red: session stopped immediately, return to the pits. Yellow and red stripes: slippery surface (oil or water).

Black and black-and-orange flags

Black with a car number: report to the pits immediately (penalty or technical issue). Black with an orange disc and a number: your car has a technical problem such as a leak or loose bodywork, so come straight in. Black-and-white chequered: session finished at the line. This flag language is FIA-standardised and applies worldwide.
