What is an anti-roll bar?

An anti-roll bar is a torsion bar that links the wheels of one axle and reduces body roll in corners. When the car leans through a corner, the bar twists and generates a counteracting force. More bar means less roll and a more direct steering response.

Roll, pitch and yaw

A car moves in three rotational directions: roll (leaning sideways in a corner), pitch (the nose diving under braking) and yaw (rotation about the vertical axis). Anti-roll bars work against roll. For circuit performance, less roll is usually better: the steering responds more precisely and the car feels tied down.

Setup tuning with anti-roll bars

A stiffer front bar adds understeer. A stiffer rear bar adds oversteer. The ratio between front and rear defines the handling balance. Standard 911 models usually run a balanced setup, while GT3 and RS versions use stiffer bars for sharper steering. Some tuners offer adjustable bars with several stiffness settings.
