What is a race suit?

A race suit is a multi-layer fireproof overall made from Nomex or comparable materials. In a fire it protects the driver from burns for a defined period, typically 10 to 12 seconds under FIA 8856-2018. It is mandatory in almost every racing series, from GT3 to Formula 1.

FIA standards

FIA 8856-2018 is the current standard for race suits and replaces the older 8856-2000, with stricter testing and a longer protection time. The leading brands are Sparco, OMP, Alpinestars and Stand21. Prices run from around 500 euros at entry level to 3,000 euros and up for top specification. Always wear the suit with fireproof underwear, boots and gloves – otherwise the protection has gaps.

When do you need one?

For ordinary track days a suit is often not compulsory, but it is worth having. For licensed track days, races and race taxi programmes it is usually mandatory. Anyone getting serious about circuit driving should invest in an FIA suit early, alongside a helmet and boots as the basic kit. ESC race taxi and GT3 tours supply the suit and equipment.
