PSE

What is PSE?

PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) is Porsche's optional sports exhaust system. It uses an electrically operated valve in the rear silencer: closed, the note stays discreet; open, the characteristic boxer sound is fully released. PSE is switched on at the touch of a button or automatically in Sport and Sport Plus. You can identify the system by its oval black tailpipes.

Sound and function

PSE is first and foremost an acoustic feature – the six-cylinder boxer note becomes fuller, harder and more emotional. Beyond that, the flow-optimised system slightly reduces exhaust back pressure, so the power and torque curves breathe a little more freely. The real power gain is marginal, but the driving experience is noticeably more intense, particularly on load changes and at higher revs.

PSE on the circuit

On track PSE is usually left open – the stronger sound also helps the driver read revs and load changes. One caveat: some circuits enforce strict decibel limits, the Nordschleife among them. With the PSE valve open a 911 can sit right at that limit. A breach can mean being sent home for the day, or a fine.
