What are helmet requirements?

Helmet requirements set out which helmets are accepted at circuit events. The key standards are ECE 22.06 (the current European standard), Snell SA2020 (the American racing standard) and FIA 8859-2015 (international motorsport). Not every motorcycle helmet is approved for car racing - the requirements differ. At trackdays the rules vary from organiser to organiser.

The key helmet standards

ECE 22.06: the current EU standard for road helmets, accepted at many trackdays. Snell SA2020: developed specifically for car racing, with fire-retardant materials and multiple-impact testing. FIA 8859-2015: the international racing standard, mandatory at FIA competitions and in many national race series. If you are a committed trackday driver, a Snell or FIA homologated helmet is the sensible choice - it offers more protection and already qualifies you for entry-level racing.

Helmet features for the circuit

A good trackday helmet gives you a full visor with a wide field of view, a fire-retardant liner, HANS anchor points, good ventilation and low weight. Full-face helmets are the norm - open-face helmets are not permitted at most circuits. Fit is critical: the helmet must sit firmly without pressure points. It is worth being measured properly when you buy.

Helmets at ESC events

At ESC trackdays helmets are included for CarForGo participants - you do not need to bring your own. They meet every requirement and are inspected regularly. If you would rather use your own helmet, check the current requirements beforehand. Your instructor will be happy to advise you. Properly equipped, out on track.
