What is a fire suppression system?

A fire suppression system is a permanently installed firefighting system in a race or track car. Sensors detect fire conditions such as heat and flame, and the system discharges automatically or at the pull of a handle. Nozzles distribute the extinguishant through the engine bay and the cabin.

FIA standards

Competition use recognises two FIA classes: FIA 8865-2015 (mechanical systems, the classic standard) and FIA 8865-2010 (electronic systems, lighter and more compact). The extinguishant is usually FK-5-1-12 or an aerosol. A service every two years is mandatory. Cost: 1,500 to 4,000 euros. The system connects to an internal push button and an external pull handle.

When is it mandatory?

In FIA competition from licensed classes such as GT4, GT3, GT2, LMP, F1, F2, F3 and Formula E – effectively every racing series. Track days rarely require one, but it is strongly recommended in a private race-spec build or for anyone taking safety seriously. It can also matter for insurance.
