What are vehicle dynamics?
Vehicle dynamics describe how a car moves longitudinally, laterally and vertically. Accelerating, braking, steering – every force acting on the car and the way it responds. Vehicle dynamics is the science of why a car behaves exactly as it does.
The three axes
Vehicle dynamics splits into three dimensions: longitudinal dynamics (acceleration, braking), lateral dynamics (steering, cornering) and vertical dynamics (springs and dampers). All three interact – brake in a corner and you mix longitudinal with lateral (see trail braking).
What influences vehicle dynamics?
Tyre grip, weight distribution, centre of gravity height, tyre width, spring and damper setup, aerodynamics. A Porsche 911 has a rear-mounted engine, high rear axle load and a low centre of gravity – which gives it a very characteristic behaviour. A mid-engined sports car such as a 718 Cayman feels completely different, because the masses sit elsewhere.
