What is Eau Rouge?

Eau Rouge is the most famous corner sequence at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Strictly speaking it consists of two elements: Eau Rouge, the left-hand kink at the bottom of the dip, and Raidillon, the steep right-hander that climbs out of it. Together they form a high-speed complex that demands both courage and precision. The name “Eau Rouge” (red water) comes from an iron-rich stream that once crossed the track here.

The driving challenge

Everything depends on timing. Coming down from La Source the track drops into the compression at Eau Rouge, where you brake briefly or lift, then immediately climb through Raidillon towards the Kemmel straight. Modern Formula 1 cars take the sequence flat; for GT cars and road-going sports cars it is a balancing act between bravery and physics. The blind crest at the top of Raidillon asks you to commit before you can see the exit.

Why it matters in motorsport

Eau Rouge and Raidillon are motorsport's classic test of nerve. Whoever takes it flat belongs among the quick. The sequence also carries a tragic history – serious accidents at race starts and in the wet are a reminder to treat it with respect. The mix of speed, gradient and that blind crest is what makes it iconic.
