What is a run-off area?

A run-off area is the safety zone between the edge of the track and the barrier (wall, tyre stack or guardrail). Its job is to slow a car down in a controlled way before it reaches that barrier. Modern run-off areas are usually asphalt, which lets drivers rejoin after a small mistake; historic circuits often use gravel traps, which slow a car far more effectively but usually end the session.

Asphalt versus gravel

Asphalt run-off is the standard at modern circuits: after locking up and running wide you can simply rejoin without being stranded in gravel. Critics argue that it does not punish mistakes enough – in Formula 1 that led directly to the long-running track limits debate. Gravel traps decelerate a car more effectively but usually mean your day is over. As a historic circuit, the Nordschleife has almost no run-off at all, which is one reason for its fearsome reputation.

Run-off areas and safety

Run-off design has improved enormously since the 1990s. TECPRO barriers, staggered tyre stacks and optimised geometry all reduce impact forces. The underlying principle has not changed, though: the safest outcome is coming to a stop inside the run-off area before you reach the barrier. The faster the corner, the more run-off it needs.
